First hydrogen train to begin testing in December

  • Posted: 03-10-2024

India is set to become the fifth country to operate hydrogen-fueled trains, following Germany, France, Sweden, and China. The first prototype is scheduled for trial runs on the Jind-Sonipat section in Haryana by December 2024, as part of a pilot project awarded by Indian Railways for retrofitting existing diesel electric multiple unit (DEMU) trains with hydrogen fuel cells. This initiative, overseen by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, aims to support India's goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions.

The project includes the introduction of 35 hydrogen trains under the "Hydrogen for Heritage" initiative, with an investment exceeding Rs 80 crore per train and Rs 70 crore for necessary infrastructure development across various heritage and hill routes. Targeted routes include the Matheran-Hill Railway, Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, Kalka-Shimla Railway, Kangra Valley, and Nilgiri Mountain Railways.

Officials highlight that hydrogen as a fuel source offers significant benefits for green transportation. The railway has received approval for a hydrogen plant and is conducting safety assessments in collaboration with leading agencies. Once trials are completed successfully, these routes are expected to be operational within three years, showcasing India's cultural and natural heritage while promoting sustainable transportation solutions.
